Effective mass of free neutrons in neutron star crust

چکیده

The inner layers of a neutron star crust, composed of a Coulomb lattice of neutron rich nuclear clusters immersed in a sea of “free” superfluid neutrons, are closely analogous to periodic condensed matter systems such as electronic, photonic or phononic crystals. Applying methods from solid state physics to the neutron star context, we study the transport properties of those “free” neutrons for the outermost layers of the inner crust, near the drip point ρdrip ∼ 4 × 1011 g.cm−3. In particular, we evaluate the effective neutron mass resulting from Bragg scattering by a band structure calculation. Comparison is made with the case of electrons in solids. The observational consequences are briefly discussed.

Entrainment coefficient and effective mass for conduction neutrons in neutron star crust: Macroscopic treatment

Phenomena such as pulsar frequency glitches are believed to be explicable in terms of a differentially rotating current of “free” superfluid neutrons at densities above the “drip” threshold in the (ionic) solid crust of a neutron star. In a preceding article a microscopic quantum mechanical analysis was used to predict that the relative motion of the neutron current will be characterised by a d...

It is shown that in the local rest frame of the crust the relative current density n of such conduction neutrons can be expected to be related to the corresponding particle...
